Readin’ and Writin’

It looks like fall has finally begun, and with its arrival, we can start all the cozy activities that come along with it! Hunkering down in a warm house with a cup of hot cocoa and getting around to that book you’ve been meaning to read? That’s a good feeling. It’s also a great time to write down some of those thoughts and stories that you’ve been plotting in your head all summer; did you know that November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)? Halloween Drinkables (and Polly’s Dry Ice Punch Recipe!)

Okay, so Halloween is mostly about candy. And don’t get me wrong, candy is the greatest! But when I was a kid, there was nothing more exciting than getting to drink dry ice punch at a Halloween party. I still think dry ice is just about the coolest thing, but I haven’t really thought about it in years. Now I wanna make dry ice punch right now, and I want to drink it out of these spooky glasses from Bread and Badger, available right here at Modern Mouse! In my hunt for dry ice punch recipes, I also discovered a treasure trove of other delicious Halloween beverages on…wait for it…Martha Stewart. Yum city!

Come get your scary cups before the 31st!

Here’s a recipe for dry ice punch as I remember it (thanks, Mom):

- 2 liters Sprite or lemon-lime soda
- 1/2 gallon lime sherbet
- dry ice

With gloves on, place your chunk of dry ice at the bottom of a glass or plastic bowl. Add the sherbet and soda, stir lightly, and the magic will begin! To make it a grown-up punch, you could add vodka or light rum, but be careful as this punch is pretty darn sweet and goes down easy! Oh, and you should be able to get dry ice at your local grocery store; you just have to ask for it at the counter.

California Love

California is a great place to be. To quote the late Tupac, “California knows how to party,” and that’s certainly the truth. However, we also know how to chill. With a late summer heat wave kicking in, we’re feelin’ happy and drowsy, basking in the sun with a big glass of iced tea. Our little shop is located right on the shores of Alameda, and getting to see the ocean every day is pretty darn cool. September is sweater weather, and Modern Mouse has definitely got just the accessories to keep you warm when the cool winds start to blow. Temperatures here in the Bay Area are always unpredictable, but we all that layers are the key to a comfortable day!
